Cat Ownership

Cat RegistrationNew legislation regarding the ownership of cats, known as the Cat Act 2011 is to be adapted in phases. Phase one was introduced on 1st November 2012 and phase two came into full effect from 1st November 2013.

From 1 November 2013 all cats 6 months of age and over must be:
• Micro-chipped
• Sterilised*

You can register your cat by downloading our Cat Registration Form and returning the completed form to our office via fax, email, post or hand delivery. Or you can use our Online Cat Registration Form. Please ensure you have proof of microchipping and sterilisation to accompany your application to register your cat.

Cat Registration Form

 Unsterilised  $50.00  $120.00  N/A

Microchips are implanted under a cat’s skin, are about the size of a grain of rice and use a unique identification number to identify you as your cat’s owner. This makes it faster and easier for you to be reunited with your cat if your cat is missing.

Sterilised (or de-sexed) cats make better pets. De-sexing has health and behaviour benefits, and reduces the risk of your pet contributing to the population of unwanted cats that may become feral and pose a risk to the environment and agricultural sector.

* Exemptions to this can be given if the cat is owned by a registered breeder, or by letter from a veterinarian in special circumstances regarding the cats health or well being.
