Temporary Accommodation
If you wish to stay in temporary accommodation on private property for more than 5 nights within a 28-day period, you must obtain approval from the Shire.
When approval is required
Approval is not required if you are staying for:
- Up to 5 nights within any 28-day period.
Approval is required if you are staying:
- More than 5 nights within a 28-day period.
- For a maximum period of up to 24 months (subject to approval).
Eligibility
Applications will only be considered where:
- The property is zoned Residential, Rural Residential, or Rural.
- You own the property or have the legal right to occupy it.
Temporary accommodation is not permitted within Zone 5 – Point Henry unless it is associated with an existing dwelling that has an adequate water supply and a fuel-reduced area.
Requirements
Temporary accommodation must:
- Be located entirely within the property boundaries.
- Comply with applicable setback requirements.
- Be at least 1.8 metres from other structures.
- Meet the Shire's health and safety requirements, including:
- power
- potable water
- wastewater management
- cooking and laundry facilities
- fire safety measures
- waste and recycling arrangements.
Additional requirements may apply depending on the site.
Applying
To apply, you must:
- Complete the Temporary Accommodation Application Form.
- Pay the applicable application fee.
- Allow the Shire to inspect the property if required.
If approved, a permit may be issued for up to 24 months. A new application is required if you wish to continue beyond this period.

Conditions
- Temporary accommodation cannot be used for holiday accommodation or tourism purposes.
- You must notify the Shire if the accommodation is no longer being used before the permit expires.
- The Shire may revoke an approval if permit conditions are not met.
