Permits to Burn, Fire Pits and Camping & Cooking Fires

Camping & Cooking Fires

Camping and cooking fires in the Shire of Jerramungup are regulated under Fire Control Policy No. 7 – Camping and Cooking Fires.

These rules help keep our community and environment safe, especially during the fire season.

Please read the information below before lighting any fire.

When are Fires Allowed?

All open-air camp or cooking fires are banned during restricted and prohibited burning periods, unless:

  • The fire is on your own residential property and:
    • It is in a registered fire pit, or
    • It is lit under a current Permit to Burn, contained in one of the following:
      • Purpose-built brick, rock, or mortar structure
      • Purpose-built steel barbecue or fire drum
      • Sand fire pit (≤ 1 m diameter; walls ≥ 30 cm high)
    • You are at an approved location:
      • Bremer Bay Beaches Resort and Tourist Park
      • Bremer Bay Caravan Park
      • Jerramungup Caravan Park
      • Tozer’s Bush Camp
      • Shire-managed camp areas with a camp host

⚠️ On days with a “Very High” Fire Danger Rating (FDR) or above, and on Total Fire Ban days, no open campfires are permitted anywhere.
Check Emergency WA for up-to-date FDR and ban information.

Cooking Fires

Cooking fires are only permitted if:

  • The flame is fully enclosed in a recognised gas or electric appliance, and

The area within 5 metres of the appliance is cleared of combustible material.

Fire Safety Rules

  • Fires must not exceed 1 m² in area or 1 m in flame height.
  • Fires must be attended at all times.
  • Fires must be fully extinguished before leaving.

⚠️ Non-compliance may result in fines under Section 25 of the Bush Fires Act 1954.

Permits to Burn

A Permit to Burn is required during restricted burning periods if you wish to light:

  • Bonfires
  • Fire pits
  • Open cooking fires

How to Apply

Contact your local Fire Control Officer (FCO).
As FCOs are volunteers, please apply well in advance.

You will need to provide:

  • Property address
  • Contact details of three able-bodied people who will remain at the fire
  • Details of firefighting equipment on site (must be in good working order)
  • Confirmation that firebreaks are installed and fire appliance access is available
  • A description of the materials to be burned, including dryness and size

Permit Conditions

  • You must follow all conditions listed on the permit.
  • Keep the permit with you during the burn.
  • Show the permit to an FCO or Ranger if asked.

Failure to comply may result in enforcement action.

Registered Fire Pits

Property owners may register a backyard fire pit at their permanent residence instead of applying for individual permits each time.

  • Registrations are assessed by the Chief Bushfire Control Officer.
  • Approval is valid for 3 years, with renewal available.
  • Registration remains valid while you own or occupy the property. If you move or sell, the new residents must re-register.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Fire Pit Registration Form.
  2. Attach a photo of the fire pit.
  3. Sign the declaration confirming you understand and will comply with the policy.
  4. Submit your form:
    • In person at the Shire office
    • By email to cesm@jerramungup.wa.gov.au
