Road Maintenance and Construction Programs
The Shire of Jerramungup has approximately 1200km of roads, with road maintenance and construction programmes utilizing the majority of Council’s budgeted funds.
Major works completed in 2009/2010 were the sealing of 5km on Devils Creek Road, re-sheeting of sections of Swamp, Jacup North, Fitzgerald and Mallee Roads, flood damage repairs on Corackerup and Monjebup Roads, construction of shared pathways in Bremer Bay, and completion of a new medical practitioner's residence and two new houses for the police officers who relocated from Ongerup this year. Planning and design also commenced for the Bremer Bay Town Centre, Jerramungup Revitalisation project and additional residential housing blocks in Jerramungup.
Major roadworks planned for 2010/2011 include subcontracting to Main Roads WA for road works on Swamp Road as part of the National Park upgrade. Ratepayers are assured that all works undertaken for Main Roads WA will be within the Shire boundaries and not on sections of roads which come under the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) jurisdiction. A further 5km of Devils Creek Road will be sealed, and drainage and flood crossing upgrades are planned for Lake Magenta, Jacup North and Middamidjup Roads. In addition, a significant portion of available funds will be expended on roads within the Jerramungup townsite as part of the Jerramungup Revitalisation project. A copy of the 2010/2011 Road Construction Budget can be downloaded here.
Council's roadworks programme takes up a significant portion of the total budget and is prepared well before the budget is formulated, taking into account the funds that can be raised from all areas, including rate revenue, State grants and Federal grants, to reduce the impact on ratepayers. Due to the amount of work that goes into the roadworks budget preparation and the costs involved in roadworks construction, Council is not able to approve additional road construction works during the year without deleting works already included. If you have identified roads requiring greater attention than general maintenance can provide, you should contact a Councillor with your request for inclusion in future budget deliberations.
Road maintenance is performed as required, with activities such as road grading scheduled to be carried out on a regular basis. All queries and requests relating to roads, drainage and infrastructure should be directed through the Council office where one of the administration staff will record and lodge a customer action request and the matter will be responded to by the relevant employee. Road maintenance requests can also be lodged online.
